YCYW English Speech Competition – Kim’s Speech

YCYW English Speech Competition – Kim’s Speech

YCYW invited all schools in China to participate in a foundation-wide English Speech Competition. The event followed last year’s successful foundation-wide English Creative Writing Competition. The purpose of the event is to encourage students to develop their skills in speaking English and to build their confidence in expressing themselves orally in the language. The theme was ‘Telling stories that matter…’ where students could further choose from the two divisions of ‘Original Stories’ covering a personal story or addressing a global issue or ‘Retelling a Story’ of something that is important to them.

Our Primary Learning and Teaching Coordinator, Mr Devreaux Poole, was more than excited that all Primary students in Years 3-6 had the opportunity to participate in this event that linked different strands of the English and Social Studies curricula and offered a myriad of benefits. He describes that the students were able to develop clearer pronunciation as they worked towards conveying meaning audibly and with appropriate intonation, using appropriate vocabulary and language structures. In addition, the students developed self-confidence and gained public-speaking strategies. They were also guided to become more reflective learners as they described incidents from their own experiences, putting events in a logical sequence.

We are proud to announce that our Year 3 student, Kim Chieng, has been selected the overall winner in her age category within the division of ‘Retelling a Story’, convincing the panel of judges of coordinators, curriculum development officers, heads of schools and the guest judge, Dr Michelle Zoss, English Education associate professor from Georgia State University. Kim delivered a fantastic speech reviewing the touching story of book character August Pullman, ‘Auggie’, from the book ‘Wonder’ by R. J. Palacio. We congratulate Kim on her outstanding achievement!

Together with other YCYW student finalists and ‘honourable mentions’, Kim won an online workshop with Matt Dickinson, British author, filmmaker and Everest summiteer. Mr Dickinson delivered a captivating workshop to the Primary students mainly by retelling his ascent to Mount Everest. His journey presented plenty of clues for the students on how to create a descriptive story or speech, encouraging the students to spin a tale based on their personal feelings and experiences.

But let us hear from our speech talent, Kim!

What did you enjoy the most about the Speech Competition?

The speech competition gave me a chance to talk about my favourite book, and let other people know why I feel it is a good book.

Which book did you choose and why?

I chose the book ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio because I really enjoyed watching the movie when I was six years old. A few months ago, I got curious and wanted to know if there was more to the story that the movie didn’t have. So I read the book, and I was fascinated by all the small details that were not in the movie.

How did your teachers help you prepare for the Speech Competition?

My teachers were very encouraging. They didn’t make it sound like it was a competition and encouraged us to take part in writing our own speech. My homeroom teacher, Ms Erasmus, taught us about the concept of the ‘story mountain’, and she often teaches us ways to improve our writing. My English Language teacher, Mr Honey, taught us metaphors when writing stories. I used all these useful techniques when I wrote my speech about my favorite book.

How did you feel when you were selected as the overall winner?

When I heard the news, I was extremely happy and proud of myself. I never thought I could win because it was a competition that had many other talented students from other YCIS schools.

What did you enjoy most about your workshop with Matt Dickinson?

Matt Dickinson

I really enjoyed the author, Matt Dickinson’s workshop about his journey to Mount Everest. He shared his experiences, what he did, what he saw, what he ate, the challenges he faced to climb to the peak of Mount Everest. It was really nice to know that he succeeded and there was a photo of him at the peak of Mount Everest. During the workshop, we were encouraged to use our imagination and write about ‘what we will miss the most if we were to climb Mount Everest’. The author also showed us photos of trash piled up on Mount Everest. I was sad to see that. I hope that people will learn to appreciate and take care of our environment.

Kim ends the speech of her book review with a quote from ‘Auggie’: “I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives.” This time, our standing ovation goes to Kim! Well done!
